Like any other pastime with a social element, motorcycling has its own unwritten rules and expectations, including its own standard of etiquette. Practicing good motorcycle etiquette can endear you to your fellow riders and help you to make a good impression on other motorcyclists, which in turn will allow you to quickly make friends in your new community. Here are our tips.

Be Careful When Parking

Sloppily parking your bike is a surefire way to earn the ire of other riders. Be careful when parking your bike next to other motorcycles so that you give everyone adequate space to put their gear on, get on their bike, and back it out of the space without hitting anything. Keep your gear contained in your motorcycle’s storage compartments or take it with you, too.

Wave As You Pass

When passing other motorcycles on the road, it’s always nice to give a nod or a quick wave to the oncoming rider to acknowledge their presence. If you’ve just passed a speed trap, you can also tap your helmet to indicate that the oncoming rider needs to slow down.

Never Touch Their Bike

Just because you own your own motorcycle does not mean that you have free rein to touch anyone else’s bike without their permission. Don’t get on the bike, don’t turn it on, don’t do anything but look at it, unless the owner invites you to give it a test ride. You wouldn’t want someone to accidentally damage your bike by manhandling it, so give other motorcycle riders the same courtesy.
